NEWS – March 2019

Loadshedding seems to be all people talk about lately! We would like to shed some light on the subject too.

Loadshedding: River Broadband Internet up or down?

We are proud to announce that overall – most of our towers remain online during these outages and our clients connecting to them continue to enjoy our internet service. Even though the towers continue to be available, if the client does not have any systems to keep their homes connected during an outage, it does not assist them much!

The good news is that we can help you with an equipment proposal to keep your internet link powered. We can even take that further and help supply backup power for, a few lights and a TV. Depending on how many devices you want to keep up and running, and for how long, we will make sure you make the right choice.

Managed Services:

Even though our managed services may not be able to keep the power going, we can assist with your devices once the power comes back on. Making sure that all the devices are regularly kept up to date with patching and anti-virus makes using an untrusted network (maybe a coffee shop down the road that has a generator) a little more secure. No network is ever 100% safe but taking security steps for your devices does minimize the attack area you expose to the world.

The current power outages have a nasty habit of causing computers and hard drives to crash and become unusable as well – NBConnect MSP services can assist with full device backups to cloud to allow for easy restoring of data in case of emergency.

Some of the repercussions of a power outage are irritating, but not business critical – NBConnect has you covered for these as well. With extremely powerful yet light remote-control software built in, our team of specialists are ready once the power comes on to get you back up and running – Printers gone offline? Network drives not reconnecting? Give us a call to discuss remote support.

Load-Shedding – Life Hacks:

1 – Make sure to switch off and unplug all electronics and appliances 15 to 20 minutes before the scheduled loadshedding occurs. This is to avoid damage to your devices when the power comes back on.

2- Don’t forget to charge mobile device i.e. your cell phone, power bank, laptop, or any other chargeable devices that you might find useful for communication.

3- Some petrol stations don’t have a backup power solution, so make sure your vehicle has fuel in the tank.

4- a Very helpful hint is to draw cash before power outages. Although card machines run on battery power, it does run out, having cash on you can be a lifesaver.

5- When the power goes out, it is possible that batteries used for access gates, doors and security alarms may not have had enough time to fully recharge. The constant drops in electricity, also have a negative effect on most batteries. Ensure that during the time of loadshedding – you regularly check your battery-operated systems.

6- For those of us without a gas stove and loves coffee, during the loadshedding, remember to boil some water and keep it in a thermos ready for use. Readymade food is also a winner.

7- Road-rage is real. When the lights go down and the traffic lights stop working, please remember to stay calm and treat each intersection as a four-way stop. Stay alert and keep your eye on other road-users… Safe journeys during this interesting and challenging time.
